Basics
“Basics” includes information that parents and students receive throughout the school year.
About Reading Logs:
It is important that all students find joy and passion through books. That being said, sometimes the completion of a reading log can become boring for students. I do not want our “Boyd’s Bugs Reading Log” to ever feel like a dreaded task.
Instead, I have created a twist on the concept of a reading log. You may simply write down a book title in the “Reading Activity” box. That is completely fine to fill the Reading Log with books that have been enjoyed. However, unique reading activities can also be recorded on the log.
It is my goal for students to express themselves and be individuals while they explore reading in ways that interest them. I will always offer some suggestions, but please do not let my ideas squelch a brilliant reading idea your student develops.
About Spelling:
Each week students are responsible for learning and studying a new list of spelling words. At the beginning of the school year, students take a Spelling Placement Test. Students may be placed at a 1st grade, 2nd grade or even 3rd grade spelling level. This will allow each student to remain challenged as they learn new words throughout the school year. As the school year progresses, if it appears a student should be challenged at a higher spelling level this can be considered.
About AR Testing:
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a program that tests student’s ability to comprehend books. These could be books that they have read, or books that someone has read to them. Each trimester students will receive a personal goal to reach. The goal will be point based, not based upon reading ability. We want all students to find success as growing readers.
Our school library even awards avid readers at the end of the school year. Wouldn’t it be amazing to have students in our own class awarded for their passion to read!
About Math:
Everyday during math we have the opportunity to learn with students that are not Boyd’s Bugs like us. Another 1st & 2nd grade teacher (across the hall from our classroom) Robin Duran and I will share students during math.
1st grade students will remain in our classroom, while Mrs. Duran’s 1st grade students join us.
2nd grade students will walk across the hall to join Mrs. Duran’s 2nd grade students during our hour of math learning.
Student Benefits:
- Exposure to new students and learning materials
- Ensuring all students have one full hour on grade level specific math
- Increased consistency and structure throughout the school year
